Ranch Wool from the ranches' sheep serves as a raw material for craft trades. The flock is pastured daily by the sheperdess and makes an important contribution to weed control and direct fertilizing of the old vineyard. Colome also has 20 riding horses as an attraction for the hotel guests and mules which are indispensable for expeditions to the high pastures, up to 4000 m (13,125 feet) above sea level. The mules also pull the plow on the densely planted new vineyards, where tractors cannot pass. The animal population is rounded off by some 30 cattle. Along the ruminants there is also a need for pigs, rabbits, turkeys, ducks and geese. Another cornerstone of Biodynamic agriculture is the production of 1200 tons of tons of natural compost and the Biodynamic preparations. We apply the following basic principles for animal husbandry in Colome. The stables are designed to meet the needs of the animals and not the other way around. We advocate peaceful and loving care of the animals; veterinary treatment is given using homeopathic or natural medicines whenever possible. Dra. Regina Haller
