The Tren de la Libertad rides on the northern circut of the railroad built at the beginning of the 20th century and connecting the northern highlands with the tropical coast.
Depart from Quito to Ibarra where you will embark on the train. The train descends down to the warm, dry valley of Ambuqui, going through sugar cane plantations, magical landscapes, and tunnels and crossing bridges that span large canyons and gullies. The 26-km ride to Salinas plunges from 2,200 down to 1,500 meters above sea level (7,216 to 4,920 feet) in only about 2 hours. Arrive in Salinas and enjoy lunch composed of delicious, local dishes before visiting the village of Otavalo with its famous indigenous craft market that is the largest in South America. Return to Quito in the late afternoon by car.

Beyond expectations! Then again we weren't sure what to expect. Lovely stay at the lodge, met other like-minded travelers (many had their trips planned by Adventure Life) and the owner was a gracious hostess. It felt like you were one happy family, visiting with a favorite aunt.

I've just started the process, but Tilly has been very helpful and has a great personality that puts a traveler at ease. I think the paperwork has just begun so I can't give an overall rating of the whole experience. So far, so good.
