Drive north to visit "El mirador
de Guápulo" (view point), from where we can admire its church and
Quito's nearby valleys. We'll go south towards Quito's colonial center - one of
the world's cultural heritage sites, where we can see many historical buildings;
including churches, museums and monuments. From here we'll continue to El Panecillo
- the small, rounded hill which dominates the old town. From its summit we'll
see marvelous views of the whole city stretching out below, as well as magnificent
views of the surrounding volcanoes.

1 day geographical
and cultural tour. Drive to Calderón, a small village about 10 km. north-east
of Quito. Calderón is a famous center for a unique Ecuadorian folk art.
Here the native people make attractive decorations from dough. We'll continue
to the middle of the world's first monument, and pass through Cayambe, on the
way. Arriving in Otavalo we'll visit the famous Indian Market which dates back
to pre-Inca times. Finally we'll visit Cotacachi, which has good leather shopping
opportunities, and Cuicocha - the ancient eroded volcanic crater, famous for its
deep lake found within. Views of the lake and surrounding mountains are excellent
when the weather is good.

Morning drive south along

market, which has eight different plazas, each of which sells specific goods.

PM1 - Cotopaxi - Pujili
Market (Wednesday)
Breathtaking scenery from the world's highest active
volcano.
After an early morning drive east towards the Chillos Valley,
we'll head south, along the "Avenue of the Volcanoes", viewing the spectacular
and breathtaking high plains surrounding the magnificent snow-capped Cotopaxi
- the earth's highest active volcano (19347ft/5897m), with possibilities of seeing
the Andean Condor. After lunch in the Limpiopungo valley (12540ft/3800m) we'll
ascend to El Parqueadero (15180ft/4600m). From this point we'll hike for about
an hour to El Refugio, the volcano's refuge lodge (15840ft/4800m). A short walk
from here will take us to the nearest glacier.
In the afternoon we travel
to the quiet village of Pujili where we have the opportunity to purchase local
goods, including a variety of fine ceramic fold art.

PFR1 - Pasochoa Forest Reserve

Drive east towards the Chillos valley. Then we'll head south through
the striking "Avenue of the Volcanoes", arriving in the park which is
only 40 Km. south of Quito, situated in the area of the extinct Pasochoa volcano,
with its typical highland flora and fauna. Short walk and return to Quito.

Termas De Papallacta is a hot springs spa and resort situated
in a high Andes valley forty miles outside of Quito. For decades, the soothing
thermal waters and natural surroundings have made Termas de Papallacta a popular
stop for many Ecuador travelers. The temperature of the springs at their origin
varies from 30º to 70ºC (86º to 157ºF) and the temperature
of the pools fluctuates between 36º and 42ºC (97º and 108ºF).
The hot springs have been noted to benefit those suffering from rheumatism, arthritis,
stress, sleepiness, digestive problems
but more importantly, are so relaxing!

emerald lagoon surrounded by several snow-capped volcanoes.

We
depart from Quito at 7h00 for the Santo Domingo area southwest of the capital,
which will take us about two-and-a-half hours. We reach our put-in near the town
of Santo Domingo amid the cloudforest, and after our safety briefing, we navigate
up to 30 kilometers of some of the best whitewater west of the Andes!
Depending
on water levels, our rafting adventure should take us about three to four hours.
On our way, we'll encounter an abundance of bird life, and possibly spot a family
of the Southern River Otter. We enjoy a delicious lunch on the river, as well
as a cold drink at the end of our run... then we head back to Quito, arriving
in the late afternoon.(L)

BIKE1 - Mountain Biking
in Cloudforest

The adventure begins with an exhilarating
descent down the slopes of Pichincha Volcano. The tundra grass of the Andean paramo
changes before our eyes (and the knobby tires of our bikes) as we roll down into
lush cloud forest. Steep gorges and ridges covered by impenetrable jungle provide
spectacular views on the 3-4 hour downhill ride. Enjoy a roadside picnic enroute.
