Day 1 Arrive PlacenciaTransfer to hotel and meet this evening for trip briefing. Day 2 Explore Blue Creek (L,D)Early this morning we depart from Placencia heading south. We begin our day with a stop at the Maya site of Nim Li Punit. The ruins here have the second longest Mayan stelae ever discovered. After a tour of the site, we will continue on to Blue Creek village, a picturesque Maya village, where we will check into our small, rustic guest house that is run by a local Maya family. You will feel transported back to a simpler time upon entering this community of subsistence farmers. After settling into the guesthouse, we'll continue our journey by hiking a half hour into the jungle to explore Blue Creek Cave. In this remarkable wet cave we find Maya pottery and petroglyphs carved into the cave walls by these ancient people. We'll don lifejackets and headlamps for a closer look at the cave's secrets. In the afternoon, we continue to Rio Blanco National Park to enjoy the scenic waterfall, relax and swim before returning to the village in the evening where our host family will treat us to a typical Maya dinner. All meals are prepared and eaten in the homes of the villagers, so you will have a first hand taste of the Maya lifestyle. After dinner we take a night hike through the jungle with our local Maya guide, searching out nocturnal creatures of the forest. Overnight Blue Creek. Day 3 Kayaking (B,L,D)After breakfast with our hosts we load our boats and begin our 2 day journey down the Monkey River, paddling in our tandem inflatable kayaks into isolated areas full of wildlife. Note: The accommodations in Blue Creek Village are at a rustic guesthouse. Along the river we will be camping in tents with sleeping mats and sheets. Bathing is done in the river and there is only a pit toilet for the one night along the river (we know it's rough, but pretend you are on Survivor!). Belize Rainforest 4 Day ExtensionUS$930/person Tour Code: BR4 Extend your trip for a few days by journeying into the Belizean rainforest. Discover cathedral shaped caves, explore winding trails in the Maya Mountains, and paddle down the Macal River - an exhilarating way to end your tour! Day 1 Arrive Belize (D)Arrive at the Belize City airport and transfer to your jungle retreat. Along the way stop at the Belize Zoo, where in typical Belizean fashion animals roam 29 acres in large natural enclosures. Your jungle lodge is tucked next to the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve and Roaring River. Surrounded by pristine forest, your days at the lodge are filled with natural discoveries exploring the lush vegetation of the Maya Mountains and the mysteries beneath. Day 2 Rio Macal and the Maya (B,L,D)This morning paddle down the Macal River for your first introduction to Belizean wildlife. Your guide will help you spot iguanas, peccaries, coati mundis and a myriad of bird life. For lunch, we stop at the Garcia Sisters <click here> for a traditional Mayan meal. These five sisters have been instrumental in reviving the art of Yucatec Maya slate carving and maintaining the language, culture and traditions of the Maya in Belize. While here, walk the Medicine Trail, visit their botanical garden, tour the Tanah Mayan Art Museum, and listen to stories of spirits still revered by the modern Maya. Day 3 Actun Muknal Tunichil Cave (B,L,D)We wake early for our unforgettable adventure into the Maya underworld. We begin our journey from our lodge doors, crossing creeks and journeying deep into the Belizean jungle to the opening of the sacred Actun Tunichil Muknal - the Cave of the Stone Sepulcher. At the entrance we gear up with helmets and waterproof headlamps, then wade into the emerald colored water flowing from the cave's gaping mouth. Our journey follows the river's flow through wet and dry caves encased in hanging stalactites and towering stalagmites. Our final destination is the spectacular primary chamber where ancient kings and priests made blood sacrifices to appease the Maya gods. Our lights illuminate the ghostly outlines of skeletal ritual victims and scattered ceramic shards of ancient rituals. Tunichil is an active archeological site, so we're careful not to disturb the sleeping skeletons and ceramic pieces before returning to the light above ground. Those preferring life above ground can choose from a variety of alternative excursions. Day 4 Return Home (B)After breakfast transfer back to Belize City to catch your flight home or continue on with other travels. Includes : 3 nights jungle lodge, airport transfers in Belize
